What to Expect During Your First Visit to the Orthodontist

TeamOrthodontics

Do you have an upcoming appointment to learn more about orthodontic treatment? Whether your dentist has made a recommendation for you or your child, or you have specific goals you’d like to address, scheduling an orthodontic evaluation is the logical first step.

Going to the orthodontist for the first time can seem daunting. But knowing what to expect can help you feel more relaxed. Here’s what a typical first visit to the orthodontist entails.

New Patient Paperwork

You’ll begin by filling out some new patient paperwork that allows us to get to know you or your child. This information includes past dental and medical history, as well as insurance information. These documents are then e-filed to our secure system so that your personal information is safe, yet accessible when necessary.

Orthodontic Evaluation

The first part of your visit will include an orthodontic evaluation. Images will be made of teeth and jaw, including X-rays to show what exists below the surface. The orthodontist may also review your dental records including any X-rays and images your dentist has taken. All of this information will be accumulated to form your recommended treatment plan.

Recommendation For Treatment

Your orthodontist will recommend the best course of treatment to achieve the necessary results. This may include braces, oral appliances, clear aligners, retainers, and other orthodontic treatments that are designed to shift the teeth into proper alignment. You will also receive an estimated timeline for treatment.

In some cases the patient may not be ready for treatment. It may need to wait until a child loses more baby teeth or for other restorative dental work to be completed. In this case we will see you every 6 months for monitoring until the time is right to begin treatment.

Consultation on Insurance and Payment

Once a treatment plan has been created, the next step is to discuss insurance and payment. If you have dental insurance that includes coverage for orthodontic treatment, we will help you make the most of your benefits. Once your insurance is factored in, the remaining balance can be paid in installments over the course of treatment.

Am I Obligated to Begin Treatment?

There is never any obligation to begin treatment or make any payments during your first visit. You can choose not to receive treatment, or to put it off until a later date. We can continue to monitor you or your child’s teeth until you are ready.

Conclusion

The first visit to the orthodontist is just a starting point to determine if treatment is needed and when is the ideal time to begin. By scheduling an orthodontic evaluation you are taking an important step toward a lifetime of oral health and a confident smile, for yourself or your child. The transformation that orthodontic treatment provides can be life-changing.

Frequently Asked Questions About the First Orthodontist Visit

Will I get braces at my first appointment?

In most cases we do not put braces on anyone’s teeth at the first visit to our office. If you choose to undergo treatment, we will schedule another appointment to begin.

Does an orthodontic evaluation hurt?

There is no discomfort associated with an orthodontic evaluation. A visual assessment and some X-Rays and other images are created, but none of that will hurt.
