Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics
What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?
Dentists and orthodontists have a lot in common: they both earn a DMD or DDS degree and they both work to help their patients achieve and maintain good oral health. The main distinction between the two professions is that orthodontists receive up to three years of additional training and education in tooth movement, facial and jaw abnormalities, and growth concerns. Orthodontists are the specialists when it comes to braces, Invisalign, and other orthodontic treatments.
What is a good age to get braces?
Braces take an average of 24 months to complete, but there are always outliers: some individuals finish treatment much sooner, while a very small percentage of patients with complex cases take longer than 24 months. We have the ability to use AcceleDent technology to speed up orthodontic treatment, but it’s also important to keep all of your appointments and contact us right away if a bracket breaks, a wire becomes loose, or an elastic is lost in order to keep your treatment on track.
How long will braces take?
Every patient is different, but in general, we won’t recommend braces until a child has lost all of their primary teeth. Aside from that, there are no age restrictions—you are never too old to get the smile you’ve always wanted!
Is Invisalign worth getting?
Yes, Invisalign is a worthwhile investment. Many adults and teenagers are self-conscious about wearing metal braces, and Invisalign provides a virtually invisible treatment option. It’s also worth noting that Invisalign’s advantages go beyond aesthetics: straighter teeth are healthier teeth, and a proper bite can prevent dental problems caused by abnormal wear in the future.
What does interceptive orthodontics mean?
Instead of waiting for abnormalities and bite issues to appear and then treat them later, interceptive orthodontics encourages normal jaw growth while the jaw is still forming. Your child’s time in braces during their preteen or teen years can be reduced or even eliminated with interceptive orthodontic treatment.
